History

Settled by Russian explorers and traders in the mid 18th Century, Alyeska became the northernmost supply point for the fur trade.  The gold rush of the mid 19th Century resulted in a population boom, both from North American pioneers and Russian citizens seeking to escape the rule of the Czar.

Alyeska gained its independence in a bizarre fashion.  During the Great War, Bolsheviks seized control of Russia and executed the entire royal family—except for one, Anastasia Romanov.  Spirited away by her loyal bodyguards, Anastasia fled across Russia, pursued by the Bolsheviks.  She crossed over to Alyeska, where British troops (because Russia and Britain were allies) assured her safety.  When the short lived Soviet Union (1917-1921) declared its sovereignty, the Russian population of Alyeska crowned Anastasia their queen.  After the Great War, Britain choked the fledgling Soviet Union to death in the cradle with the Royal Navy in the Russian War of Restoration (1919-1921), the aim of which was to restore royal rule to Russia.  Of course, the real reason was to put an Englishman on the throne.  Anastasia was ignored.  So she remained Queen Anastasia I of Alyeska; she had no stomach for any further fighting.

Rulers

The Romanovs, who are the only ruling family in North America actually descended from European royalty.  This alone has been enough to assure Alyeksa’s sovereignty, as the crowned heads of North America were eager to legitimize their nobility by combining their lines with European royalty.

Relations

Alyeska is the most isolationist of the North American kingdoms.  It maintains laconic ties with Cascadia and the Dominion of Canada, and pretty much ignores everyone else, aside from the occasional politically-motivated marriage.

The only nations Alyeska actively dislikes are Russia, which has labeled Alyeska a rogue state that should be reabsorbed into the mother country, and the Empire of Japan, which seized control of the outlying Aleutian Islands during the Pacific War of 1933-1945.  Alyeska is pretty much a completely interdependent nation, what with its bounteous resources and small population, and it likes to keep it that way.
